2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group

Who We Are

2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) is responsible for the area of Northern Quebec and reports to 2nd Canadian Division.

It provides patrols for national-security and public-safety missions in sparsely populated northern and isolated areas of Quebec. These areas cannot conveniently or economically be covered by other parts of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Canadian Rangers in 2 CRPG received the Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation for their life-saving actions after the 1999 avalanche that destroyed a school in Kangiqsulluajuaq, Quebec.

Many Canadian Rangers in 2 CRPG speak a variety of languages including

  • Inuktitut;
  • French;
  • English;
  • Cree; and
  • Montagnais.

Many of the younger Canadian Rangers are fluently bilingual or trilingual and are able to assist their elders in communicating with visitors from the south.

Canadian Rangers have been equipped with the Canadian-manufactured Lee Enfield .303 since 1947 and gradually they will be receiving the new prototype rifle, the C-19, designed by Finland’s Sako, based on its Tikka T3 CTR model. Manufacturing will be done by Colt Canada. The .308 C-19 improves on the Lee Enfield in pure power, which is an important factor in the Rangers’ operational areas where the most present threat is from dangerous wild animals. The C-19 is lighter, shorter and more accurate.
