Canadian Forces Base/ Area Support Unit Wainwright
Canadian Forces Base/ Area Support Unit Wainwright is one of the busiest Army bases in Canada. It is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, and it is the preferred training ground for the Army’s field force units based in Edmonton.
The base is located in Alberta, 210 kilometres east of Edmonton and 110 kilometres southwest of Lloydminster. The Town of Wainwright sits immediately to the north of the base. Members of the base reside in several of the surrounding communities, but there is also a distinct residential community for the families of the serving military members located on the base proper.
In order to preserve the heritage and history associated with the base, Canadian Forces Base/ Area Support Unit Wainwright maintains, at non-public expense, a bison herd of approximately 50 animals and pastures them in a protected part of the range and training area.
