October 4, 2017 – Kingston, Ont. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre transferred command authority for the Canadian Combat Support Brigade (CCSB) to the 5th Canadian Division at a ceremony held at Kingston’s Fort Frontenac today.

The CCSB is a new brigade that was established under the command of Colonel Marc LaFortune to institutionalize key operational enabling capabilities such as Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Information Operations and Operational Support.

Previously, the Brigade operated under the authority of the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre, headquartered in Kingston. Following today’s ceremony, the Brigade operates under the authority of the 5th Canadian Division, headquartered in Halifax under the command of Brigadier-General Derek Macaulay.

Quick Facts

 The core mandate of the Canadian Combat Support Brigade is to oversee the training and operations of the Canadian Army’s key operational enabling functions, which are:

  • Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance - the collection and management of information on the operational environment.
  • Information Operations - information-related activities that are planned and conducted to have behavioural effects in support of a mission.
  • Operational Support - elements of support that facilitate all forms of military operations including engineering and artillery. 

 The Canadian Combat Support Brigade is currently in its first of three stages of establishment. At this time, the following units report to CCSB:

  • Canadian Army Intelligence Regiment.
  • Influence Activities Task Force.

 The second stage of its establishment takes place on April 1, 2018 at which time the following units will join CCSB:

  • 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment
  • 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support)
  • 4 Engineer Support Regiment

 The Canadian Combat Support Brigade is the first Regular Force brigade to serve under the command authority of the 5th Canadian Division, which is the command element of the Canadian Army in four provinces in Atlantic Canada.
