Indigenous Awareness Week event: “Dancing in unison” on Thursday, May 24, 2018

News Release / May 18, 2018 / Project number: 18-05-18-iaw

As the Defence Team Champion for Indigenous Peoples, I am pleased to invite you to celebrate Indigenous Awareness Week on May 24, 2018, at 9:45 a.m., in the Concourse of the National Defence Headquarters. For those outside the National Capital Region (NCR), I invite you to attend events organized throughout your respective Regions, or to tune-in to the Canadian Army’s Facebook page to view the NCR live-streamed event from 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (EDT). This commemorative event brings the Defence Team together and will feature a variety of guests and activities, including a women’s drum group, Inuit throat singing and drum dancing.

The Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence greatly value the contribution of Indigenous people to our organization and the Defence of Canada. During Indigenous Awareness Week (22 to 25 May), we honour the Indigenous people of Canada, past and present, and the many Indigenous cultures that enrich the mosaic of the Defence Team and our nation. The theme for this year is “Dancing in Unison”, which invites members of the Defence Team to reflect on the past while looking to a positive future where we, whether Indigenous or non-Indigenous, can all thrive alongside each other to build a better society, and a better Canada.

Mark your calendar and come celebrate Canada’s rich Indigenous history and culture on May 24, 2018.

Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk, CMM, MSM, CDCommander, Canadian Army and Defence Team Champion for Indigenous Peoples
