Commander Canadian Army Lieutenant-General J.M.M. Hainse:

Command “you are now they”:

All right! Command. Whether you like it or not, you are now ‘they’. “They made the decision.” “They don’t know what they’re talking about.” Welcome to ‘they.’ Take ownership, take control, you represent the institution, and to most of your subordinates you are the institution. That’s what you are. You guys, the command team, you are the institution. The Command Team concept. Well, there’s only one CO, there’s one commander, there’s not two, there’s one commander, the Chief is not the commander. But I can tell you one thing; if there’s one guy that can probably have the most influence in this unit, it will be your Chief. He will be as influential as you allow him to be. And let me suggest to you, if you have any doubt on how much influence you want to give him, you should err on giving him more than less. Why? Because when you take your parade every morning and you look at all of those soldiers regardless of the badge they have, most of them, seventy per cent of them, they don’t want to be like you, you the CO. They want to be like – who? – like your Chief. Don’t lose sight of that.
