2nd Canadian Division (2 Cdn Div)is one of the six major formations to report to Army headquarters in Ottawa and includes all the Regular and Reserve units working within the Province of Quebec. Its role – like that of the other three similar regional Canadian Divisions in the country – is to provide versatile, combat ready land forces. 2 Cdn Div troops may be employed by the other commands for special, domestic and expeditionary operation.
Previously named Land Force Quebec Area (LFQA) since its creation in 1992, 2 Cdn Div perpetuates the organization of military units in the Province of Quebec dating back to and before the Confederation.
The mission of 2 Cdn Div is to generate and maintain, at designated states of readiness, combat ready, multi-purpose land forces to meet Canada’s defence objectives, both at home and abroad. Members of 2 Cdn Div take part in continuous, challenging, individual and collective training to prepare them to achieve this mission.
Formations and Units
2 Cdn Div comprises four main formations acting under the command of the Area headquarters in Montreal:
- 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (CMBG), located in Valcartier, Québec, is a Canadian Army battle formation. Established in 1968, the Brigade has an establishment of close to 4,800 members of the Regular and Reserve forces as well as civilian employees and is equipped with approximately 1,200 vehicles of different sorts.
- The 24 Reserve units bring together Reservists within two formations which are responsible for the units from western and eastern Quebec : 34 Canadian Brigade Group and 35 Canadian Brigade Group, respectively.
- 2nd Canadian Division Support Group provides the necessary support to all of the Division units and to the lodger units that do not fall under the Army’s command. In addition to providing combat support service, the formation is responsible for the three main Army sites in Quebec: Valcartier, Montreal and Saint-Jean.
- Instruction and training is ensured by The Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (CFLRS) and the 2nd Canadian Division Training Center.
2 Cdn Div also includes 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group.
